With the presidential election just hours away, we are looking forward to the democratic process that makes America great! And it got us to thinking, if our new President comes down to Acadiana, where are the best places for him/her to visit first? The places that best represent who we are and what we love? Lafayette is, after all, the official Happiest City in America, and there is a reason people love to live here, and visit here. My top 5 favorites are below.

  • Olde Tyme Grocery - Lafayette - you can't come to Acadiana without getting a poboy, and nobody does it better than Olde Tyme, who came in second place in a nation wide poll from USA Today. (We think they are first!) And if the visit is in the summer, then walk out the door and grab a sno ball from Murph's!
  • Atchafalaya Basin / National Heritage Area - Since we are known as the Sportsman's Paradise, it would be nice to take a ride through our beautiful Atchafalaya Basin, which is the biggest river swamp in America. It's natural beauty would be perfect to fish in after the long election season.
  • Festivals Acadiens et Creoles - ok, we know this just passed, but it says so much about why we love to live here in Acadiana! Cajun and Creole food, zydeco music and dancing, locally made cajun arts and crafts, and friendly people who come from all over the world to enjoy our unique culture with us.
  • The Evangeline Oak - St Martinville - one of the most visited spots in Louisiana, it was named for the 1847 poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 'Evangeline'. The oak, and the statue of Evangeline are on the banks of beautiful Bayou Teche, and next to the gorgeous and historic St Martin de Tours Catholic Church, which was built in 1765.
  • La Pousissiere Cajun Dance Hall - Breaux Bridge - one of the most historic and authentic cultural icons in south Louisiana. La Pousissiere has been on Grand Point Ave. for over 60 years, and has been the site of countless documentaries and films about Cajun heritage. Considering how many Grammy Award winners we have right here in Acadiana, you can tell where the musical influence comes from. It is fondly known as 'La Petite Cathedrale de Musique Cajien' (The Little Cathedral of Cajun Music).
