The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office said Wednesday that one of its deputies was involved in a shooting with a suspect Tuesday night during what should have been a routine traffic stop.

According to police, a deputy performed a traffic stop on 33-year-old Evelyn Dargin for a traffic violation, but as the deputy was approaching her vehicle, she fled the scene.

Police pursued her until she stopped, but she fled again as deputies approached her vehicle.

The pursuit ended after Dargin struck a patrol car on Louisiana Avenue in Lake Charles then drove toward an officer who was outside of his vehicle and ordering her to stop. When Dargin still would not stop, a deputy fired one shot at her.

Dargin was taken to a local hospital in unknown condition.

She was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, criminal damage to property, resisting arrest, and several other traffic violations.

State police are investigating.
