Two people fleeing police were killed when the driver ran the car off the roadway, and it slammed into a tree.

Police started chasing the car after it was seeing going the wrong way on a roadway that was only one way.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff's deputies and Opelousas Police gave chase to the 2015 Dodge Dart, but the driver did not stop.

Because the Dodge Dart was so severely damaged by fire, State Police Troop I Spokesman Trooper Brooks David says they have not been able to identify the two victims yet.

David says the driver of the Dodge was fleeing in the northbound direction on Highway 167 when he lost control of the car, hit a tree, a utility pole, a building and then the car burst into flames.

Routine toxicology tests are pending, and the crash remains under investigation.
