The idea of bowl games actually came up at my house Saturday night as we were watching LSU dismantle Ole Miss. It was a great game for the Tigers. It was made even better by the numerous crowd shots showing anguished and despondent Ole Miss crybabies heading for the exits. It's always fun to win but it's, even more, fun to whip people you know.

However, there is also a certain amount of joy that comes from playing and beating an opponent you're not that familiar with. Maybe that's why "bowl week" in college football is my favorite sports week of the year.

My buddy Winky Dinky Dawg and I have a special attraction to the Belk Bowl. It's played in Charlotte at the stadium where the Carolina Panthers play. It's sponsored by the Belk Department store chain. I don't know why but for us the Belk Bowl is the boundary line between a decent bowl game and a made up bowl game.

We all know the Louisiana's Ragin Cajuns won't cross the Belk Bowl line. Their lot in life will only carry them to New Orleans or Mobile and they still have a lot of work to do if they are even going to sniff a chance at participating in those bowl games.

LSU, on the other hand, appears to be poised for a better than Belk Bowl season. Most of the pundits want to put the Tigers somewhere in Florida on or close to New Years Day. Several writers surveyed in a story on NOLA.com are suggesting the Outback Bowl in Tampa or the TaxSlayer Bowl in Jacksonville. Most of the writers don't think the Tigers will return to the Citrus Bowl where they crushed Louisville last year.

Let's assume that LSU holds serve for the rest of the season with the exception of Alabama. That would give the Tigers a record of 9 wins and 3 losses. They could jump Auburn in the SEC west if Auburn falls to Georgia and to Alabama in their final games of the year.

So if LSU isn't going to grace the muddy quagmire of the Belk Bowl on December 29th who will? ESPN.com is suggesting that it will be a match up between Georgia Tech and Florida or Virginia Tech and Kentucky. Meanwhile the two ESPN prognosticators have LSU in the state of Florida against Florida State in the TaxSlayer Bowl  on December 30th or in Tampa at the Outback Bowl on New Years Day against Michigan State.
