Investigators in St. Martin Parish have identified human remains discovered on July 4 in an area off of Leland Road in Henderson as those of an adult male and an adult female, and officials said they likely were unearthed from a grave.

Maj. Ginny Higgins with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office said the remains were sent to the Louisiana State University Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services Laboratory in Baton Rouge for further verification.

Higgins said the remains looked as if they had been unearthed and exposed for an extended period of time. The remains likely were from disturbed graves at a cemetery, and they were more than 10 years old, Higgins added.

The remains were not linked to any missing people within St. Martin Parish, Higgins said, but investigators are trying to determine how they ended up where they were found.
