What should have been a routine traffic stop led to the arrest of a combative suspect who was jailed on 16 separate charges Thursday.

Iberia Parish Sheriff's spokesman Maj. Ryan Turner reported deputies were attempting to stop 36-year-old Leroy Lewis while he was driving on Eden Street in New Iberia.

Turner said, rather than stopping, Lewis sped away before exiting the vehicle on foot.
