Landry gets heavyweight fundraising help for race

IN THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN, La. (AP) — In the swamps of south Louisiana, a half-dozen Republican members of Congress from around the country have gathered this weekend. They'll be shooting alligators, stuffing themselves on Cajun food — and raising money for former U.S. Rep. Jeff Landry.

Among those who are being ferried by boat to Landry's rustic camp in the Atchafalaya Basin was House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

Landry hasn't invented the uniquely Louisiana fundraiser. But his fourth-annual event offers an unusual boost for a candidate running in a state attorney general's race that's more than a year away.

Landry managed to grab a high profile during his one term in Congress. He's hoping his congressional friends will help him oust current attorney general, Republican Buddy Caldwell, next year.

The election will be in October 2015.
