LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL) — Representative Jeff Landry believes a new academic minor being offered at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is fiscally questionable. On Friday’s edition of “The Afternoon Drive Home” with Jeremy Lawrence, Landry made it clear the university’s new minor in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual studies does nothing to help better graduates’ earning capacity.

This is a prime example of what’s wrong with this country and elite academia in this country. Here we are, in the middle of economic tough times, and the universities are consistently crying about budget cuts…To me, we should be concentrating what little public funds we have…on assuring that we get students out of that university with a degree that gives them an opportunity to get in the job market and increase their earning capacity.

Landry said his disapproval of the minor is based strictly on fiscal responsibility. When asked if he would have a problem with the program in better economic times, Landry said that would be a debate for the public as a whole.

Landry also took some questions from callers. You can listen to the full interview, including Landry’s conversations with KPEL’s listeners, by clicking ‘Play’ below.
