WAGGAMAN, La. (AP) — Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies say the father and stepmother of a Waggaman teenager face a charge of second-degree murder in the wake of the boy's death.

Coroner's Office Chief Investigator Mark Bone says 14-year-old Jalen Daniel died Monday from injuries caused by head trauma.

Col. John Fortunato said in a news release Daniel was severely beaten last week.

Investigators say Daniel and his 15-year-old brother were regularly beaten by their father, Furnell Daniel, over poor grades.

Fortunato says Furnell and Terri Daniel were arrested Thursday.

Furnell Daniel's attorney, Lionel Burns, said his client is shocked and distraught over his son's death.

Furnell and Terri Daniel remain in the Jefferson Parish jail. No bond has been set.
