Early voting for the December 6th runoff elections has begun, and one state lawmaker is upset because of how short the period will last.

According to the Monroe News Star, State Rep. Marcus Hunter, D-Monroe, does not like the fact that this specific early voting period will only last five days from November 22-29 – Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.

"If you're going to declare the day after Thanksgiving a state holiday, giving state employees the day off, why wouldn't you allow for them to go vote?" Hunter said. "What reasonable argument can you assert to not allow state workers that opportunity to do it on their day off?"

Hunter says he plans to sue Secretary of State Tom Schedler over this, but Schedler, in a release through his office, says he’s just doing his job.

"Secretary of State Tom Schedler cannot and will not advise our registrars of voters to violate current state law concerning early voting which clearly states, 'A registrar shall observe the holidays which are provided by law or proclaimed by the governor for state departments during any period for conducting early voting.' (R.S. 18:1309 A. (4))."

The Secretary of State’s office says state law mandates polls be closed when state offices are closed. Voting hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
