Five people were taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained while escaping an early morning fire at Victory Village Apartments on Van Buren Drive. The injured people suffered minor burns as well as leg, ankle and back injuries.

When firefighters arrived at approximately 4:00am they were able to quickly put out the flames. Residents of the three occupied upstairs units were forced to lower children from the balconies and then they jumped to safety because fire blocked their exit doors.

All eight apartments sustained heavy smoke and fire damage. Investigators determined the fire originated in the upstairs breezeway and was intentionally set. If you have any information about this fire you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 337-232-TIPS or the Lafayette Fire Department at 337-291-8716.
