A 21-year-old Lafayette man was arrested Friday evening after allegedly robbing a man at gunpoint and then trying to force the victim to withdraw cash from an ATM.

Lafayete Police Cpl. Paul Mouton said officers were called out to the parking lot of a business in the 5700 block of Johnston Street in regards to an armed robbery in progress.

The victim told police that the suspect, Jonathon Tyler Whitteker, entered his car from the passenger side door as he was parked in the parking lot. Whitteker allegedly produced a handgun and demanded the victim's money and cell phone. The suspect then ordered the victim to withdraw cash from a nearby ATM, but when the victim refused, Whitteker fled the area on foot.

Mouton said responding officers found Whitteker, along with the victim's money and cell phone, nearby on Johnston Street.

Whitteker is charged with armed robbery and attempted aggravated kidnapping.
