According to Lafayette Fire Chief Robert Benoit the City may have 30 new firefighters in coming months. 30 recruits entered training recently and after enduring six months of rigorous training they will fill 10 vacancies in the department and 20 of the new hires will staff the newest fire station being constructed on Curran Lane near South Domingue which is set to open in June 2015.

20 of the new hires came on-board with the help of a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant of $1.7 million. The City of Lafayette received the grant in 2013.
