Lafayette Fire Department officials say that Christopher Fuselier and his family were able to get out safely, but  a major part of their rent home sustained heavy fire damage.

Firefighters were called out to East Cedar Street just before 11 o'clock last night after a call came into the 911 dispatch center saying a mattress was on fire.

The family was moving into the home when Fuselier's wife started smelling smoke, and they quickly all left the home.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Lafayette firefighters were able to contain the fire damage to the mattress set under the carport area and the part of the attic just above it.
