STATE AND LOCAL POLITICS

Residents across Acadiana approved new taxes and decided on elected officials in a Saturday election that left some races almost too close to call.

And in a race still forthcoming, a new poll shows U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu leads her Republican opponents — although a slight majority disapproves of her performance.

Then there's the weekend sneak attack. In a move to avoid mid-year budget cuts for the seventh year in a row, Gov. Bobby Jindal issued an executive order Friday evening that freezes government spending. Two days later, he appeared with Jeb Bush in a new GOP ad — while the other Bush opened a new art exhibit featuring his paintings of world leaders.

POLICE BLOTTER

An armed robber was spooked away empty-handed after shooting at a Lafayette store clerk, who returned the fire. The same night, but in Crowley, a shooting left one man dead and sparked a retaliation shooting the next day.

Two men died in separate fires in Hammond in Abbeville over the weekend, and a small plane crashed at the Acadiana Regional Airport. Lafayette Police are also investigating an early Sunday morning pedestrian fatality that left a yet-identified 57-year-old woman dead.

And good news for both the Earth and sugar farmers: LSU researchers are looking at ways to use sugar byproducts to make plastics biodegradable.

In entertainment news, CBS is reportedly tapping a well-known television host to replace David Letterman after he announced his upcoming retirement.

And have you ever listened to the Lafayette Food Junkie Show on KPEL? This week's episode featured Toby Rodriguez, who talks about boucheries and the revitalization of Cajun culture. It's OK if you missed it — you can still listen here.
