It’s a free fishing weekend, as anyone can fish in fresh or salt public waters without a fishing license on Saturday and Sunday.

State Wildlife and Fisheries Outreach Biologist Alayna McGarry hopes this will get more people involved in the sport of fishing.

“A great opportunity for anglers that have friends that have been wanting to go out on the boat or try their hand at fishing, giving them a free weekend to go out fishing and nothing is holding them back.”

McGarry says there are no rules or exclusions for those who can fish without a license, but anglers will still have to follow all fishing regulations. She hopes this will encourage more individuals to purchase a license to fish after this weekend.

“The more fishing licenses we sell, the more we can put back into managing the fisheries and put that into education and outreach for the public.”

McGarry says there are plenty of places anglers are guaranteed to catch a nice sized fish.

“We have some get out and fish locations that are stocked with catchable sized catfish and depending on where you are in the state, there is probably going to be one close by.”
