Now that spring is officially here, and you are probably planning for that summer vacation with the family, it could be a great time to explore the beautiful scenery in our own back yard! Only in Louisiana has reminded me of some unique destinations around the state that might not be first in mind when you are planning a road trip. These destinations are all fascinating, but don't take the 'off the beaten path' part too literally, because some of these are not too far from where you are right now. So get ready to geaux explore, y'all!

  • Holly Beach - known as the 'Cajun Riviera', a summer destination for generations of families
  • River Road African American Museum - Donaldsonville - founded in 1994
  • Driskill Mountain - south of Bryceland, it's Louisiana's highest natural summit
  • Jordan Mountain - Bienville Parish, clocking in at 435 ft, our second highest summit
  • Caney Lake - part of the Jimmie Davis State Park in north Louisiana, (not the Caney Lake Recreation Area)
  • Creole Nature Trail - 180 miles of beautiful wildlife preserves and refuges near Lake Charles
  • Prehistoric Park - Henderson - 12 acres of fun with dinosaurs, for kids of all ages
  • Rip Van Winkle Gardens - beautiful and lush gardens and landscapes near New Iberia
  • Robinson Film Center - Shreveport - showing classics and international movies, with the only outdoor balcony dining space in the city
  • Rosedown Plantation - St Francisville - built in 1884, with 28 acres of lush gardens. And not nearly as scary as it's sister plantation, the Myrtles
