If you've ever spent spring break, or summer vacation in Panama City Beach, Florida, then you've probably jammed to the sounds of WASJ 105.1 Bob FM, WRBA 95.9 Classic Rock, WKNK 103.5 Kick’n County or CHR Hot 107.9.

According to the Panama City News Herald 'Five days after the storm, Powell Broadcasting, a radio staple in the Bay County area, announced that due to substantial damage to their Panama City Beach facility, they would cease operations, pulling out of the local market for good'.

Evidently, their 150-foot studio transmitter link tower was snapped in half by the powerful winds of Hurricane Michael, which tore a hole in the roof and flooded the building.

This makes me so sad, not only for the radio folks who are now out of a job, but for the community who won't have their local connections through their radio stations anymore. The recovery effort will be that much more difficult without that moral support, guidance, and important information.

And as a side note, a lot of my co workers here at Townsquare Media, used to work for Powell Broadcasting when they owned another group of stations in Lafayette. We love our fellow broadcasters, and hope our friends in Florida get back on their feet real soon.
