LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — A Louisiana school district says a new policy is in place for campus volunteers after there had been little guiding officials about how to register them.

The Daily Advertiser reports the Lafayette Parish School System policy establishes two levels of volunteers, those who are and aren't supervised by district personnel while interacting with students. The school board approved the policy this month.

Level One volunteers will be checked against sex offender registries. Level Two are those whose interaction doesn't require supervision, like field trip chaperones or coaches, and they're required to undergo a criminal background check.

District Human Resources Director Suzanne Thibodeaux says the previous policy required volunteers to have a background check but didn't specify why someone might fail, so officials had to go by hiring standards, which may not have the same threshold.
