Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office has issued warrants for a man who evaded law enforcement last night while in a sugarcane field near the St. Martin/Iberia Parish line.

According to witnesses, 27-year-old Nathaniel Olivier led a multi-agency contingent on a search of the Coteau Holmes area, east of St Martinville, for 6-7 hours Friday.

Witnesses told KPEL, around 5 p.m., teams had cornered Olivier in a cane field. With a helicopter overhead and K-9 units dispatched, law enforcement nearly had the suspect in custody, but he escaped as twilight neared and the search was called off.

According to our news partner KATC, Iberia Parish Sheriff's deputies attempted to pull Olivier over for a traffic stop, but he sped off leading several units on a chase. At one point Olivier, crashed into a deputy's vehicle, causing the officer to be treated, but released from a local hospital.

The chase continued as a female passenger drove the car into St. Martin Parish as Olivier bailed from the vehicle. She eventually crashed the car an was taken into police custody. Her identity has not been released.
