St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert is warning of a new phone scam. According to Hebert an elderly person received a phone call notifying the victim had won a sweepstakes prize. During the call, allegedly from a cash and prize company the scammer got the victim's social security number and bank information. No money was stolen but the scammer transferred thousands of dollars from one of the victim's accounts to another in an attempt to fool him into thinking he had received the prize money.

Hebert advises to guard your personal information and if someone claims you won a contest you did not enter it's probably a scam. He also said if you have to pay to claim the prize or ship the prize it probably is a scam.
