BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Tom's Bayou at State Wildlife Refuge in Vermilion Parish is closing for construction of two rock weirs.

The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says the area will be closed May 1-30. Officials said Friday that the project will take about two months to complete, but all other canals on the refuge will remain open from official sunrise to sunset.

Refuge visitors should also use caution when navigating Fearman Lake because of dredging equipment and activity.

State Wildlife Refuge is about 13,000 acres of marshland on the southwestern shore of Vermilion Bay. It is about six miles south of Intracoastal City and is bordered by the Audubon/Paul J. Rainey Wildlife Sanctuary to the west and Vermilion Bay to the east.
