Two men were booked into the Iberia Parish Jail Friday amid allegations they broke into a business in an attempt to rob it.

According to Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal, deputies were called out to the business on Trotter Street in New Iberia while the burglary was still in progress.

When police arrived, Ackal said 27-year-old Dane Romero was found on the property with burglary tools in his possession. Romero tried to flee the scene on foot, Ackal said, but he was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit.

An investigation discovered that a utility trailer at the business had been broken into, and lawn equipment had been removed, Ackal said.

Detectives later arrested a second suspect, 38-year-old Marcus Rankin of New Iberia at his home.

Romero is facing counts of simple burglary and resisting an officer. Rankin faces counts of simple burglary.
