UL Softball Completes Series Sweep Of Georgia Southern

The 20th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball team extended their current win streak, while completing a Sun Belt Conference weekend series sweep of the Georgia Southern Eagles on Sunday in Statesboro, Georgia.

Louisiana collected a 6-2 victory, completing their third-straight conference sweep of the season.

The Cajuns won both games on Saturday, capturing the first game, 15-0, in five innings, before taking the second game, 10-2, in six frames.

Louisiana ended up outscoring Georgia Southern in the three games, 31-4, combined.

The win extends the Cajuns’ current winning streak to 9 games, and their Sun Belt Conference win streak to 15 games, dating back to last season.

The two triumphs on Saturday also guaranteed Louisiana their 32nd-consecutive series victory, a school and Sun Belt Conference record.

The Cajuns haven’t lost a league series since 2013, when they dropped 2-of-3 to South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama.

Louisiana got on the scoreboard first, scoring 2 runs in the top half of the first inning, when Haley Hayden belted a two-run home run, her 6th of the season, to give them a quick 2-0 lead.

The Cajuns added two more runs, both unearned, in the top half of the 2nd inning, courtesy of a run-scoring triple off the bat of Kara Gremillion, followed by a sacrifice fly by Hayden, to make it 4-0.

Keeping with the theme, Louisiana plated two more runs in the top half of the third inning, both unearned, to widen their lead to 6-0.

Georgia Southern scored their first, and only runs, in the bottom half of the 4th inning, plating two runs, including a fielders choice RBI by Alesha Mann, as well as a run-scoring single from Hannah Farrell, to trim the deficit to 6-2.

The Eagles threatened in the 5th and 6th innings, stranding 5 base runners, as UL hung on for the 4-run victory and the series sweep.

Louisiana, who was outhit Georgia Southern, 7-5, but who took advantage of four unearned runs, was led at the plate by Hayden, who went 1-for-2, including a homer and 3 runs batted in.

Alex Stewart (12-3) recorded the win in the circle for the Cajuns, allowing two runs on 7 hits, over 5-plus innings.

Alyssa Denham pitched the final two innings, without allowing a hit or a run, to record her first career save.

Dixie Raley (9-13) suffered the loss for the Eagles, allowing 4 hits and 6 runs, including 2 earned runs in 2-plus inning of work.

With the win, Louisiana improved to 26-5, overall, and 9-0 in league play, while Georgia Southern dropped to 15-19, and 5-7, respectively.

The Cajuns now lead the all-time series against the Eagles, 10-1.

UL returns home next weekend, when they play host to the Troy Trojans in a three-game, weekend, Sun Belt Conference series at Lamson Park.

The two squads will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 o'clock, followed by a single game on Sunday at noon.
