Voter Registration Deadline Is This Week

Monday, Oct. 6, is the last day to register to vote for the upcoming Nov. 4 election, and Secretary of State Tom Schedler is urging Louisianians to make sure they can cast a ballot.

Citizens will be choosing a new senator to represent Louisiana, and every vote could go a long way toward deciding which party has control of the U.S. Senate.

Schedler says that's why getting people to register and to the polls is critical.

"We have the huge U.S. Senate race, which some political pundits are saying could be the deciding vote on the Senate," said Schedler.

He says the Oct. 6 deadline is for citizens who have never registered to vote and voters who would like to make changes to their registration.

Shedler says this is one of the largest elections ever as far as offices up for grabs, with 2,400 positions and issues on the ballot, along with more than 4,400 candidates.

"We've never had anything like that in the last decade or so," Schedler said.

Schedler says his office estimates there will be 30,000 new voters for this election in Louisiana.
