*UPDATE: As of 10:00am - Vermilion Parish has decided to close the schools at 11am.

With the heavy rains on Friday, August 12th, 2016, many of Acadiana's public schools made the call to close for the day. Not all Acadiana parishes had made the decision prior to school buses picking up students, including Vermilion parish, whose first day was set for today. One listener submitted the video above and wondered why schools in her parish were remaining open. School administrators made the decision to keep the students at school instead of risking transporting students back home.

More rain is expected for the remainder of the day and into the weekend, due to a low pressure system spinning along the gulf coast. Stay tuned for more updates on the flooding situation as well as a reminder to stay safe on the roadways.
