YOUNGSVILLE--Simone Champagne is the newest member of the city council.

The former state representative for Iberia and Vermilion Parishes now represents Division A, succeeding Jamey Abshire. Abshire resigned after taking a job with the Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department. According to a Facebook post by Mayor Ken Ritter, Champagne's appointment will continue until a special election his held this fall.

Champagne also has experience in Youngsville city government. Champagne served as the city's chief administrative officer from 2014 until her retirement at the end of 2020. She also ran for Lafayette Mayor-President in 2019.

The special election to fill the Division A seat will take place on October 9. The runoff, if necessary, will take place on November 13. Qualifying for the seat is scheduled from July 14-16.
