No Texas police officer or deputy should be killed while on the job, although we know that is the sad truth sometimes. These brave men and women are fighting to keep our communities safe and sometimes that means laying down their own life.

Which was the sad way in which we lost Deputy Jesus “Jesse” Vargas as he was attempting to serve a warrant in the Houston area.

Normal Day Until the Shooting Took Place

According to KHOU, deputy Vargas and his partner was working with the U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force to serve a warrant for Sean Christopher Davis.

At around 11:30 a.m. the pair pulled over a truck in a strip mall, Davis was the passenger, and upon being told to exit the vehicle, he opened fire on law enforcement and ran from the scene.

Deputy Vargas was shot in the head and after going to the hospital he was pronounced dead.

He was a 17-year veteran with the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office. Leaving behind a wife and three daughters.

The Manhunt Was on to Capture Davis Immediately

If you shoot at law enforcement in Texas, you know that every officer in the state will be looking for you immediately. After the shooting, a Blue Alert was issued for Davis and a few hours later a K-9 officer alerted to a dumpster near the shooting scene.

The U.S. Marshal K-9 Rocky was released and Davis who was hiding in the dumpster shot Rocky twice.

Deputies returned fire and Davis was shot and killed in his hiding place in the dumpster.

One officer was also shot during that gun exchange, he is expected to make a full recovery. Rocky is also expected to recover from his injuries.

We are thinking about Deputy Vargas’ family as they navigate this tragic situation.
