The egg shortage is having an impact on everyone. Waffle House is now charging an extra $.50 cents for each egg you order. There is no quick fix, so we can expect to pay these higher prices for a while.

Why Are Egg Prices So High?

Bird flu has forced farmers to kill millions of chickens each month and this is causing the dramatic price hike. It’s also resulting in a shortage of eggs in some grocery stores around the country.

Once the bird flu is found on a poultry farm, the entire flock is slaughtered to help limit the virus' spread. More than 145 million chickens, turkeys and other birds have been slaughtered in the U.S. since the current outbreak began, with the vast majority of them being egg-laying chickens.

Grocery Stores Are Now Limiting Egg Purchases

Several major grocery chains have put limits in place in an effort to have eggs available for more customers. Trader Joe's has set a limit on how many eggs you can buy.

Trader Joe's spokesperson, Nakia Rohde issued this statement:

Due to ongoing issues with the supply of eggs, we are currently limiting egg purchases to one dozen per customer, per day, in all Trader Joe's stores across the country. We hope these limits will help to ensure that as many of our customers who need eggs are able to purchase them when they visit Trader Joe's.

Albertsons has a limit of 2 cartons of eggs for each customer. I found that limit trying to make an online order. Kroger also has a limit on online orders of eggs at 2 cartons. I assume these stores also have limits for in-store purchases. But I don’t know if this is a nationwide policy.

Costco is also limiting egg purchases to 3 cartons per customer. This comes after videos surfaced shows folks piling up eggs in shopping carts.

Bird flu has now popped up in dairy cows and that is raising concerns about the future supply of milk. But in Louisiana, this has not been a problem, at this point.
