Hummingbirds Arrive: Shreveport’s Spring Treat (March 15-30)
One of my favorite little surprises of spring is spotting hummingbirds. I still get giddy when I spot one in the wild. It's just as exciting as seeing a shooting star. I love seeing hummingbird feeders around Shreveport because it means that there is a chance that a hummingbird will make its presence known. Did you know that Shreveport is one of the hot spots for hummingbirds to drop by and visit during their migration?
Hummingbirds Are On Their Way to Shreveport Right Now
Accuweather just shared a graphic depicting when we can expect hummingbirds to invade our space. Ruby-throated hummingbirds are returning to the eastern part of the US after spending the winter in Mexico and South America, and we are lucky enough to see several of them in just a few days. Northwest Louisiana is expecting hummingbirds from March 15th through March 30th.
Keep Hummingbirds in Louisiana Safe: Feeder Mistake to Avoid
Although you may be getting excited about feeding the beautiful birds that will grace us with their presence for a short while, there is something that several people do that is killing hummingbirds. If you think that adding natural honey or Kool-Aid to the hummingbird feeder is safe, think again; the only thing that you can add to a hummingbird feeder is plain white sugar.
Hummingbird Feeder Dangers: Why Other Sugars Kill
A hummingbird can't digest different forms of sugar. In some cases, a hummingbird won't be able to retract its tongue because of fungal spores that have germinated on its tongue or gullet. This is caused by people mixing honey or anything other than plain white sugar with water. Please feed the hummingbirds, but be careful and make sure you're not killing them. We love these beautiful creatures here in Louisiana.
