Texas House Speaker Tells Trump “We Will” When It Comes To Passing School Choice
Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows, who has said numerous times that he believes the House has the votes to pass school choice has now passed on that information to President Donald Trump.
On Saturday, President Trump took to Truth Social to congratulate both Lt. Governor Dan Patrick and Texas State Senator Brandon Creighton for passing Senate Bill 2, school choice out of the Senate. In the post Trump took a shot at the House for failing to pass school choice in the past despite Lt. Governor Dan Patrick getting it out of the Senate six times.
Trump said, "The Texas House must now pass School Choice to deliver a gigantic Victory for Texas students and parents. I will be watching them closely."
In previous sessions, the House has lacked the votes to pass school choice, but many of the Republican hold-outs were defeated in the primaries last year.
The Senate Bill proposes using $1 Billion dollars from the state surplus to fund the education savings account. All school-aged children will be able to apply for the education savings account. Those who get the ESA will $10k for private school education. Home-schooled students would $2,000 according to the Dallas Morning News.
Those who support school choice say they believe this will empower parents and give them more of a say in their child's education. Opponents say the program will take money away from public schools.
Burrows has supported school choice in the past and has said on KFYO that he believes the issue will pass.
