The Surprising History Behind “Happy Hour”

The history of Happy Hour and its evolution is an interesting phenomenon. According to Britannica, in the latter part of the 19th century, women would often hold social gatherings in the afternoons to discuss topics, play games, and socialize with one another. At those gatherings, there was no alcohol. Many of the meetings featured lectures on temperance.

Here's a brief history of the temperance movement from that time.

Fast-forward to 1913, when the Happy Hour of the United States Navy was established. Aboard the USS Arkansas, several men formed a group they called the Happy Hour Social, where they would gather to talk, socialize, box, and play music. Once again, however, no alcohol was served at these gatherings, as it was not permitted on any Navy ships.

From Temperance to Tequila: How Happy Hour Evolved

When prohibition started in 1920 and lasted through 1933, no one was worrying about a public happy hour, but it gave rise to illegal sales of alcohol and establishments like speakeasies. Now, Wine Pairings explains that the modern era of Happy Hour began in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Happy Hour traditions are a blast. It's a good way to wind down after work, and if you are going with colleagues, you get a chance to socialize in a setting outside of work. Usually, you have discounted food and beverage offerings.
