(Lafayette, Louisiana)  - A Lafayette woman collecting sandbags to protect her home from flooding made a great point to me while I assisted her on Tuesday morning.

Acadiana is predicted to receive several inches of rain in the days ahead, and for those who live in areas prone to flooding, they are doing their best to protect their homes and businesses.

While we don't live in an area of the city that is prone to flooding, my wife's business is in an area that collects water, so after I got off the air Tuesday morning, we met up to collect a few sandbags to put against the entrances to the building.

Once we were done bagging our sand, we noticed an elderly woman shoveling sand, so I asked if I could assist her, and she declined. She told me that she did not want to be an inconvenience, and I told her that I would not continue to allow her to do this on her own.

As I was shoveling sand into the bags she held, the woman made an excellent suggestion for future sandbagging days. The woman said that the parish should allow trustees, in the Lafayette Parish jail, to come out and assist those who can't shovel and bag sand on their own.

I stopped what I was doing and agreed with her. She would add, most of them would likely feel honored to help those who could use a helping hand, and that they would feel a sense of accomplishment in assisting those who are in a rush to protect their property.

While it may be too late to have trustees out this time, I hope it's something Lafayette Parish and others consider if we ever have to collect sandbags in preparations for another flood.

As we completed the task, the woman thanked me and we wished each other the best in the days ahead.

I want to echo what my friend Sgt. Robin Green from the Lafayette Police Department said to me this morning, if everyone is a good neighbor in the days ahead, we'll get through this.

So, be observant in the days ahead, and if you see anyone who could use a helping hand, assist them and continue on your way. It doesn't cost us anything to be nice.

Here's a look at what Acadiana may be dealing with Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning. Things could change, so continue to check back here for the latest.
