New Louisiana Law Allows Those Frogging to Carry Firearm
(KTDY) - Several new laws in Louisiana went into effect on August 1, 2025, and one law now allows those carrying to carry something with them.
For anyone who has ever gone frogging in the swamps of Louisiana, you know that you are out there in the dark, and often without protection from other people or predators.
Well, that has all changed as of August 1, 2025. Act 109 by Sen. Eddie Lambert, R-Gonzales, repealed a prohibition on carrying a rifle, shotgun, or firearm while frogging after the sun goes down.
For many years, those out frogging could not carry a gun with them, as previous lawmakers felt that it might entice those out frogging to hunt wild animals while it was dark.
According to the Louisiana Illuminator, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries asked the lawmaker to bring this up as the agency felt that prohibiting anyone from carrying a weapon with them at night may conflict with current laws in the state.
Lambert did note that those out catching frogs at night should be allowed to carry a weapon with them as a form of protection, and now they legally can in Louisiana.
When is Frog Season in Louisiana
Frog season in Louisiana runs from June 1 to March 31. Again, those out frogging cannot use a gun to "hunt" frogs, but are allowed to either spear or gig the frogs they are seeking.
You are required in the state of Louisiana to have a basic fishing license on you while out catching frogs, and the size limitation on the frogs is as follows:
"Bullfrogs must be at least 5 inches long, and pig frogs must be at least 3 inches long, measured from snout to vent. However, these size limits do not apply when harvesting on private land for stocking purposes where the harvester is an authorized representative."
Of course, I know some who catch frogs with their own hands while shining a light in the frog's eyes, and that is perfectly legal too.
