(Lafayette, Louisiana) If you drive through your city or neighborhood in south Louisiana, you will likely notice that many of the lawns have mushrooms growing in them.

So, why are there so many mushrooms showing up in yards in recent weeks? It turns out that this is largely due to recent weather conditions.

The mushrooms are a type of fungi that seem to sprout out of nowhere, and many of us see them as an "eyesore" in our yard, even though kids love to pick or destroy them.

Why Mushrooms Grow in Yards?

Mushrooms often appear in yards with ample shade or in areas of the yard that receive little sunlight throughout the day. Additionally, moisture in your yard plays a significant role in the appearance of mushrooms during the summer months.

Louisiana has been fortunate this summer to have received plenty of rainfall, which has kept the soil in your yard moist, allowing mushrooms to thrive.

And while the mushrooms may not be so attractive in your yard, they do play a vital role in the ecosystem of your yard. If you see mushrooms growing in your yard, it's a good indication that the soil in your yard is suitable for good growth.

Can You Eat Mushrooms in the Yard?

As for eating them, many mushrooms can be poisonous, so it's best not to consume them or allow your pets to eat them. If you see a mushroom in your yard, just assume it can be a risk to your health, and move on from eating it.

So, until it dries up in Louisiana, we will continue to see mushrooms pop up in yards, and the kids will continue to enjoy kicking and picking them.
