What Dangerous Things Could Lurk in Your Yard After Flood in Lafayette
(Lafayette, Louisiana) - Several inches of rain fell in Lafayette, Louisiana, on Thursday morning, forcing many to skip or be late for work.
Major roadways were flooded throughout the city Wednesday morning, and several roads outside the city limits were not passable. Some photos on social media showed some schools and businesses with water, while other photos showed water levels close to homes.
Now that the water is beginning to recede throughout Lafayette Parish and other surrounding parishes, you need to be on the lookout for a few things in your yard.
For one, this amount of rain will most certainly bring out more ants in your yard, so if you have kids, be very aware of this potential threat around your home.

Also, anytime it floods in South Louisiana, wildlife is relocated, so you can see things like rodents, nutria, and even snakes in your yard. It hasn't really gotten cold enough yet here for snakes to go into hibernation, thus they are still on the move and could be lurking where there's higher ground.
If you live near a pond, lake, or stream, you could expect to even see alligators in places where you would not expect to see them.
A colleague at the station reported that her yard and driveway were covered with crawfish too, which some may say isn't a bad thing if you're into eating them.
We share this reminder with you because we want you to be safe in your yard or on your patio once the water recedes. It would not be a bad idea to inspect any furniture you may have outside on the patio.
