(KMDL-FM) If you have shopped at any of Louisiana's almost 700 locations between October 10, 2016, and November 19, 2025, that's almost a decade, you will likely have money coming back to you. Dollar General is making amends in regard to a settlement of a class action lawsuit that accused the popular small-town retailer of overcharging customers.

Dollar General's bread and butter are the smaller communities. The brand is often the only diverse retailer in many of these towns. In fact, the brand just announced an enhanced effort to provide the convenience of same-day delivery to customers in many of Louisiana's smaller communities.

And while the stores themselves serve as important economic engines for the communities they serve, there was an apparent issue in pricing that many customers felt was worth bringing to the attention of the courts.

Why Was a Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Dollar General Stores?

A class action suit filed in New Jersey accused Dollar General of charging customers more than the advertised prices on many items in the store. Which seems particularly heinous since the retailer prides itself on offering lower prices for hard-working families in smaller communities.

The result of the class action settlement means that Dollar General is now attempting to make amends to customers by offering that "overcharge" back to them in the form of a check.

By filing a claim before the April 13th deadline, a customer could receive $10 per item or the amount of the overcharge, whichever is higher, as compensation. There are limits to how many items you may claim in your claim against the company. The current understanding is that each household is limited to two items. So, at the very least, you could be compensated $20.

In many cases, that refund will be offered in the form of in-store credit, which seems kind of "sneaky" in my opinion. With in-store credit, the company is "still keeping the money" they allegedly overcharged you for, but at least you get something, right? You still have to do the legwork.

The settlement is not an easy one to explain, but there is information on how to submit your claim and even earn a discount for doing so. To expedite the process, you might want to consider opening a DG Account. However, it is not necessary.

Those who currently have DG Accounts active should have received an email from the company regarding the court settlement and the process for filing and claiming a settlement stipend. The final approval of this settlement is scheduled for March 19th. Further information should be made available at that time.
