LAFAYETTE, La. - If you've been thinking about adding a pet to your family, the next few weeks could be the perfect time.

What Is the Empty the Shelters Adoption Event?

The Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center is taking part in the nationwide Empty the Shelters adoption event, offering free cat and dog adoptions from July 5 through July 26.

The event is sponsored by the BISSELL Pet Foundation, which is partnering with more than 300 animal shelters across the U.S. to help pets find permanent homes during one of the busiest times of the year for shelters.

Summer typically brings an increase in stray animals, unwanted litters, and owner surrenders, putting additional strain on shelters. Organizers say the goal of the program is to reduce overcrowding while helping more families adopt a pet at no cost.

Shelter Manager Shelley Delahoussaye says every pet deserves a loving home and hopes the event encourages more people to consider adoption.

Lafayette Shelter Adoption Hours

The Lafayette Animal Shelter will be open for adoptions:

  • Monday through Friday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Saturday: Noon to 2 p.m.

Every Adopted Pet Comes Ready for a New Home

All adopted pets will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before going home.
