Life in Louisiana can sometimes be described as sticky, especially during our summer months. It can also be described as sweet, especially during football season. It could also be described as gooey, especially after it rains. Or we can just say that life in Louisiana can be described as a King Cake.

These sweet, sticky, gooey treats are symbols of our state, especially on the days between January 6th and Ash Wednesday. Yeah, the King Cake, like the beads, doubloons, and hangovers is a celebrated part of the Mardi Gras season.

King Cakes are so popular that almost everyone who lives in Louisiana has been asked by someone who doesn't live here to send them a King Cake. Fortunately, many of great King Cake bakeries allow for delivery to other parts of the nation and the world via standard shipping services.

But what if you wanted to pick out a King Cake and bring it with you on a flight to go see friends and family? Will the Transportation Security Administration allow you to bring what can sometimes be a several-pound package of cake covered in icing on an airplane?

The short answer, it depends.

Manny Randazzo Original King Cakes in New Orleans asked that question and what they discovered was this. If you're flying domestically. Namely, if your flight is within the United States you can carry your King Cake in a checked bag or a carry-on bag. It should be noted that the sweet treat will be put through the standard TSA procedures and as long as "the baby ain't packin' heat". The King Cake is cleared to fly.

Now if you have plans to travel to a destination that is beyond the borders of the United States the answer usually is "No", you can't fly with a King Cake. But that's not because of King Cake discrimination. It's more about sovereign nations protecting their borders from potentially invasive pests and species that could be brought in on "foodstuffs not properly inspected".

The Randazzo Bakery website also noted that if you're going to fly and bring a King Cake with you, you'll want to have it frosted before you get on the plane. The reason is if you bring the containers of icing or frosting in separate containers you are subject to liquid limits established by TSA.

Yeah, the same rules that cause you to toss your expensive haircare products are the same ones that would cause your King Cake to be "nekkid as the little baby inside" on arrival. Of course, you could bring your icing/frosting in containers as long as they adhere to the 3-1-1 rule established by TSA.

So if you can't be "at home for Mardi Gras" this year or any year, just know you can carry your King Cake with you, sharing is optional.
