Costco Treat Synonymous With Louisiana Subject of Urgent Recall
(KMDL-FM) Shoppers in Baton Rouge, Covington, Lafayette, and New Orleans are familiar with Costco Warehouse Stores. Those Louisiana communities each have a location of the nationwide "shopping club". The store is known for its selection and savings, and unfortunately, today, you will be connecting the Costco name to an urgent recall of a popular snack treat.

If you have shopped at a Louisiana Costco store between January 16th and January 30th, just a couple of weeks ago, then you may have encountered this product. There is also a fairly good reason to believe that many in Louisiana may have picked up the product because it certainly has a "Louisiana lean" to it.

What Is The Leading Cause of Most Food Product Recalls in America?
The reason for the recall is a labeling error. While the error is certainly unfortunate, it's not uncommon. According to the Food and Drug Administration, almost half, 45.5%, of all food product recalls involve mislabeling, incorrect labeling, or errors on the product's label in general. That is the reason for this recall.
And while something as simple as a packaging error might seem small, the effects of that error could have wide-ranging and even deadly effects. You're probably beginning to see that the product in question involves nuts.

Nut allergies affect only 1 to 2% of the U.S. population. However, those particular allergies can be quite serious and fatal if the allergic person is exposed to the allergen without proper treatment available. It is out of this abundance of caution that Costco has recalled item #1181272 Mini Beignets filled with Caramel.
The issue, according to the recall notice, does not appear to be with those beignets but more about the fact that they were packaged alongside other mini beignets filled with chocolate hazelnut. The packaging does not reflect an allergen warning for tree nuts.
If you have purchased the recalled product, you may return it to your local Costco Warehouse store for a full refund. Costco issued an apology for the inconvenience and urged consumers to take the proper steps needed to keep their families safe.
So far, there have been no injuries reported because of this recall. Costco does keep a running list of recalled products that have been sold in its stores, so consumers can use that as a reference anytime they hear of a product recall, whether that recall is made through Costco, the FDA, or some other consumer safety organization.
