Louisiana Steel Mill to Bring 1,300 Jobs Paying Around $95,000

Ascension Parish, La. - There's a lot of economic development happening around Louisiana right now. From data centers to SpaceX, things are happening all over the state.

One of these major economic developments is in Donaldsonville, Louisiana where major steel mill is coming.

A massive $5.8 billion steel manufacturing plant, Hyundai-POSCO Louisiana Steel,  planned for Ascension Parish is expected to create more than 1,300 direct jobs, with an average annual salary of approximately $95,000.

Where Will The New Hyundai Steel Plant Be Located?

The massive new steel mill is planned for the RiverPlex MegaPark near Donaldsonville in Ascension Parish.

The facility will sit along the Mississippi River in an area already set up for this type of industry because of its access to major transportation routes.

Hyundai Steel and POSCO are partnering on the project, which will manufacture steel products primarily for the automotive industry. This will be Hyundai's first steel-production facility in North America, ever.

So, it's kind of big deal.

More Than 1,300 Jobs Expected With $95,000 Average Salary

Louisiana expects the project to create more than 1,300 direct jobs and roughly 4,100 additional jobs through suppliers, contractors and other businesses.

For Donaldsonville, the scale is unusual. The city had an estimated 7,094 residents in 2025. A factory workforce of 1,300 will therefore draw from communities across Ascension Parish and the surrounding region.

Officials expect the project to create more than 1,300 direct jobs with an average salary of approximately $95,000 per year.

Of course, not every position will pay $95,000. Salaries will vary depending on experience, education, training, and job responsibilities. However, the reported average salary gives Louisiana workers something to be excited about.

Hyundai Steel and POSCO is expected to hire for a wide range of positions, including manufacturing, operations, engineering, maintenance, electrical systems, and other technical careers.

When Will The Louisiana Steel Mill Open?

Steel production at the Hyundai-POSCO Louisiana Steel facility is currently expected to begin in 2029. Before that can happen, construction, workforce development, infrastructure improvements, and other approvals will all need to move forward.

Environmental permitting remains part of the process, and the project has generated discussion among residents and environmental groups concerned about more industrial development along the Mississippi River.

There is still work to be done before the first steel is produced, but if everything moves forward as planned, this could become one of the most important economic developments Louisiana has seen in decades.
