A major crash involving two vehicles near the I-49 and I-10 interchange in Lafayette sent four people to the hospital Wednesday afternoon, including two drivers who suffered critical injuries.

UPDATE:

The roadway is now open for travel. All occupants of the vehicles involved are listed in stable condition.

ORIGINAL STORY:

According to Lafayette Police, officers were dispatched to the northbound I-49 on-ramp to I-10 westbound at approximately 2:32 p.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates one vehicle left the roadway for reasons that remain unknown, traveled up an embankment and collided with a second vehicle.

The force of the crash caused both vehicles to overturn.

Four people transported to Lafayette hospital

Police said the drivers of both vehicles suffered critical injuries in the crash.

A total of four people were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Authorities have not released additional information about the conditions of the other two people taken to the hospital.

The identities of those involved have also not been released.

Drivers asked to avoid I-49 and I-10 crash area

The crash occurred on a heavily traveled portion of Lafayette's interstate system where northbound I-49 traffic connects with westbound I-10.

Drivers are being asked to avoid the area while officers continue their investigation. Motorists traveling through the I-49 and I-10 interchange should be prepared for possible delays and use an alternate route if available.

Investigators have not yet determined why the first vehicle left the roadway before traveling up the embankment.

Lafayette Police said additional updates will be released as more information becomes available.
