Youngsville Councilwoman Kayla Menard Reaux has resigned from her elected council position in the wake of public backlash related to a November 2022 crash.

A story from The Advocate that ran late last weekend, along with subsequent police body cam videos raised questions over whether or not Reaux received preferential treatment from law enforcement due to her council position. Many also questioned Reaux's relationship with Youngsville Police Chief Rickey Boudreaux who responded to the councilwoman's call, arriving to assist her at the scene of the Sugar Mill Pond crash.

Reaux, Boudreaux, and, most recently, Youngsville Mayor Ken Ritter have all issued statements in response to backlash over the controversial story—but this morning (Mar. 30) Councilwoman Reaux tendered her resignation.

Reaux addressed members of the community along with her colleagues and family members as she announced her resignation "effective immediately," adding that she fell short of short of the high standards I set for herself as a community leader.

My behavior towards the police officers who responded to an automobile accident last November was not acceptable, and I recognize that it may have caused pain and disappointment to members of our community. As someone who comes from a family of law enforcement officers, I understand the importance of showing respect to those who put their lives on the line for us every day. I realize that my actions were not in line with my values and may have fallen short of the expectations of the people who voted for me.

The former Youngsville councilwoman said her decision to resign came as a result of her commitment to her community that she plans to continue serving through other means.

I do not want my mistake to overshadow the work we have done together to make our community a better place. My commitment to serving our community will never waver, and I will continue to support it in any way I can, particularly through community service and youth sports programs.

Youngsville Mayor Ken Ritter announced that the council will hold a special meeting tonight (Mar. 30) to decide if the city will launch an independent investigation into police chief Rickey Boudreaux after residents have publicly questioned his leadership; more specifically, his involvement in the viral story from The Advocate that covered the controversial Sugar Mill Pond crash.
