
Accidental Shooting in Opelousas Leaves One Person Injured and Another Under Arrest
The Opelousas Police Department is investigating an accidental shooting that left one person injured and another arrested.
The incident happened back on March 11, 2025.
OPD officers were called to Opelousas General Hospital responding to reports of a male shooting victim who arrived by private vehicle. Upon arrival, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.
Authorities said the victim provided minimal details about the incident.
However, interviews with a second individual, who assisted in transporting the victim to the hospital, revealed that the shooting took place inside a residence while the two were horse-playing.

The witness told police that a firearm fell from his pocket, and while he attempted to retrieve it, the gun accidentally discharged, striking the victim.
Opelousas Police confirmed the two individuals were related and that the shooting was unintentional.
Jakaylen Hollier was arrested and charged with Negligent Injury.
The Opelousas Police Department wants to remind the public to handle all firearms responsibly and safely.
