Law enforcement officials spent several hours in a standoff with a suspect who had barricaded himself inside his home.

According to Captain Leland Laseter with the New Iberia Police Department, law enforcement officials asked for residents in a three-block area to remain in their homes and shelter in place due to the situation this morning.

Laseter tells us that a shooting happened just before 3 o'clock Saturday morning near the intersection of Lombard and Hopkins Streets. Officers actually heard the shots. They immediately went to the area.

As officers were arriving on the scene they were able to follow a path by the suspect to a home.

Laseter says the standoff took place in the 400 block of West Dale Street. While the standoff was in full motion, they had advised traffic and foot traffic to stay away from the home and that area.

Laseter said officers were able to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the situation. Eventually, officers were able to get the man to come out of the home and surrender without incident. He has been identified as Brad Joseph Thomas.

Thomas was arrested on the following charges:

  • Attempted Second Degree Murder
  • Illegal Use of Weapons
  • Resisting an Officer
  • Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property
  • Unauthorized Entry of an Inhabited Dwelling
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
