We are officially into the Texas "grazing" season for at least the next two weeks. "Grazing" season is when you attend a holiday party in The Woodlands, Spring, Orange, Vidor, Beaumont, Houston, or anywhere for that matter and you stand around the snack table mindlessly eating while carrying on a mindless conversation with friends and family.

For most of us in Texas our holiday snack choices include potato chips. It seems as if there are as many varied potato chip flavors and brands as there are people who want to eat them. Not only do you have premium brands like Ruffles and Pringles but you also get the store brand knock-offs like Ridgers, Crinklers, and even Wavy Lay's which is odd considering who the parent company of Ruffles happens to be.

A lot of potato chip consumers in Louisiana and Southeast Texas are partial to Louisiana's own brand Zapp's. Zapp's chips are a uniquely kettle-fried Louisiana-style chip and that brand features flavors that line up perfectly with the palate of the Louisiana consumer. You'll be pleased to know your Zapp's chips are safe. They are not mentioned in any recall that we are aware of.

And for those of you who love your tortilla chips and salsa, you have no worries either. Just make sure you don't get the salsa that's made in New York City or you'll have to get a rope, if you know what I mean.

The chips that are mentioned in a recall notice from the United States Food Safety Inspection Service are ones we are all familiar with. I think if I say "bright yellow bag" you're going to instantly know I am speaking of Lay's Classic Potato Chip. Now that is a brand that does have a very strong connection to Texas. Frito-Lay is based in Plano and is a subsidiary of PepsiCo.

Below is a representation of what you'll want to be looking for. We have the label specifics posted below, so don't hurt your eyes trying to read the fine print on this image.

Texas-based Frito-Lay has voluntarily announced a recall of some of its products that might offered on holiday tables. The product in question is the Classic Chip, that's the yellow bag. The concern is over undeclared milk ingredients.

Ingesting the product for those who have allergies to milk or sensitivities to milk does run the risk of an allergic reaction. And yes, some of the reactions could be life-threatening. The chips have been available to consumers since early November. However, it is believed that the majority of the products were not shipped or shared in Texas or Louisiana.

Still, you can't be safe enough, right? If you or someone in your family has a milk sensitivity or milk allergy and you've purchased Lay's Classic Potato Chips please check the packaging.

The recalled 13 oz. bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips will have a “Guaranteed Fresh Date” of Feb. 11, 2025, on the front of the bag and UPC number 28400 31041. The bags must have the manufacturing code 6462307xx or 6463307xx. A description of the recalled bags is available on the Lays website as well as the FDA website.

No other Lay’s products, flavors, sizes, or variety packs are recalled.
