Traffic Delays on Tolson and Bonin Roads – Here’s What Lafayette Drivers Need to Know
LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) - Ditch-digging operations are causing traffic delays in Lafayette as crews work on critical drainage improvements along Tolson Road and Bonin Road. Local motorists should anticipate periodic disruptions over the next several weeks as the project progresses in phases.
Here’s what drivers need to know to plan their commutes effectively.
Current Progress and Work Zones
City crews have begun ditch-digging on the west side of Tolson Road and are continuing south along Bonin Road toward La Nouvelle Road.
Following this phase, operations will shift to the stretch from La Nouvelle to Pinhook Road, before circling back to complete the section from Bonin to Verot School Road on Tolson.
This is not standard road work but part of a larger effort to improve drainage by clearing and maintaining ditches along these roads, the company contracting with Lafayette Consolidated Government said, noting that crews are working in alignment with traffic to minimize disruptions.
Operations are scheduled between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to avoid peak traffic hours, though delays should still be expected during these times.
Future Phases and Additional Delays
After completing the ditch-digging, a flusher truck will follow up to clean the pipes using high-pressure water at 2,500 PSI and a vacuum system to remove debris.
This phase will cause additional delays once initiated, though no start date has been confirmed yet. Motorists are urged to remain patient and cautious while traveling through these active work zones.
Timeline and Impact
Bonin Road’s ditch-digging is expected to take another two to three weeks, while work on Tolson Road is projected to require an additional one to two weeks. However, these timelines may be extended if the city requests crews to clear clogged outfalls in the area. Drivers are encouraged to plan alternative routes or allow extra time during their commutes.
