We live in a fun, and very unique state, and we wouldn't have it any other way! But you know the look on people's faces (who aren't from here) when you throw out one of those 'Only in Louisiana' phrases? They're confused, and sometimes you have to explain what it is you're saying. We get it, and frankly, we're sometimes amused by it.

So, here are a few things that probably won't be heard anywhere outside of Louisiana. Pass this along to your out of state friends, just in case....

  • Cher - can also be spelled 'Sha'. A term of endearment used in cajun culture
  • Dressed - this refers to what you want on your Po Boy. Lettuce, tomato and mayo, and sometimes pickles, mean it's 'dressed'
  • Fais Do-Do - a cajun street party
  • Debris - this is the burnt pieces and ends that fall off a roast when it's being cooked. We make sandwiches out of debris, and they are delicious!
  • Pass a Good Time - let's go have a good time!
  • Beaucoup - a lot. We're going to have beaucoup crawfish at our crawfish boil
  • Ça C'est Bon - it's all good!
  • Holy Trinity - used to prepare every cajun dish. Onions, bell peppers, and celery
  • Laissez les bons temps rouler - let the good times roll!
  • Lagniappe - something extra. Just a little...
  • Making Groceries - go to the grocery store
  • Saving Groceries - putting the groceries away
  • Couillon - a little rascal, or a fool ( and we're being nice)
