Shrimpers Back On The Job Without Higher Prices
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana shrimpers are back on the water, and most of them returned after three days of what had been planned as a one-week strike for higher prices.
After a meeting last Friday, Louisiana Shrimp Association members say they'd keep their boats docked for a week because prices are so low.
But WVUE-TV reports that many were trawling again by Tuesday.
Warren Delacroix (DEL-uh-crow) says organizers understand that some people have to make a living. He says that some people stuck it out for the whole time.
Fisherman say processors are paying about $1.80 per pound for small shrimp. Association officials say the price was nearly $3 at the start of the season.
