Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball outfielder Kelli Martinez was named the first Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for the 2017 season on Tuesday.

A junior, Martinez was outstanding in the 31st Annual Louisiana Classics last weekend at Lamson Park, going 9-for-19, while scoring six runs, and driving in four.

A native of Katy, Texas, Martinez scored the game-tying run in the 7th inning of Louisiana's 4-3 win over DePaul in their first game on Saturday, while driving home the tying runs in their come-from-behind victory over Ball St. in their second game on Saturday.
Martinez, who led all players in the tournament with 9 hits, closed the weekend with a pair of one-hit games on Sunday against Southern Miss to extend her season-opening hitting streak to six games.

A first-time winner of the award, Martinez becomes the 23rd different Ragin' Cajuns Softball player in program history to earn the weekly hitting honor, since the Sun Belt Conference began handing it out back in 2000.

18th-ranked Louisiana returns to action on Friday, playing host to the 4th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in the opening game of a three-game, weekend, non-conference series.
